Style Guide: Modern Laundry Room Ideas and Storage Tips

Modern laundry room decor, design, and layout ideas

A modern laundry room is going to be a clean and fresh looking space, just like how you want your laundry to come out. This post on modern laundry room ideas and design tips will show you how to design your space to make it look good, and show you how to make the most of the space with the right storage ideas.

The Right Color Palette

From the pictures in the mood board above you can see that most modern laundry rooms are white. A white color palette gives a fresh, clean look to the space. Black and grey are some other color options to consider, just like the laundry rooms in pictures (4) and (6).

How To Add Some Warmth

If you do pick a white or light grey color palette for your laundry room, you will want to add some warmth to the space, otherwise it can look a bit sterile. Infusing natural materials is one way to do this. Wicker baskets (1), a wooden backsplash (2), wooden cabinets (3), and adding some plants (5) are some ideas.

Modern Storage Ideas

Any room in a modern house will be clutter free and look sleek. In the laundry room this means storing everything out of sight. You’ll want to put as much as possible inside of cabinets, with very little stored out in the open.

  • Hide away the ironing board by hanging it inside a tall cabinet
  • Or have a fold out ironing board fitted into a draw, just like in picture (8)
  • Have a look at the clever pull out modern laundry hamper draws in picture (7)

For more ideas and for some photos on how to store your ironing board, have a look at my post here: Wrestling With Your Ironing Board: Ideas on How To Store It and Hide It.

If you need to store things out in the open, then look for good looking storage containers. Matching containers work best. Have a look at the wicker baskets in picture (1) or the matching plastic containers in picture (3).

Try and fit in as much counter space as you can, along with a sink. A railing can also be a useful thing to have in a laundry room to hang up clothes – just like the laundry rooms in pictures (2) and (5).

Good Looking Cabinets

Built in cabinets are the way to go to create a modern looking laundry room. And take advantage of the height in your space, and build storage from the floor to the ceiling.

To create a modern looking laundry room, you’re going to want to make sure you have the right look when it comes to your cabinet doors since they take up a lot of ‘visual space’.

The most modern look is to not have handles. Since you don’t have anything sticking out, you are left with smooth, sleek surfaces – have a look at pictures (2) and (3) to see what I mean. To do this you can go with doors that push pop to open, or have a groove that act as a handle – just like the cabinets in picture (1).

If you do need to have handles then try and find sleek looking metal ones, seen in pictures (5) and (8).

4 Design Tips

  • Modern Lighting: Recessed lights are the way to go in a modern laundry room. The light fixtures are fitted inside of the ceiling, hiding all of the parts, creating a sleek look. And if you have a sink, you might want to bring the light down from the ceiling either by having a pendant light or under cabinet lighting.
  • Window Treatments: If you have a window that you want to add privacy to, then some modern options include hookless curtains, blinds, or shutters just like in picture (4).
  • Easy Washing: Have a look at how the washing machine and dryer are elevated in picture (7) making it easier to load and unload them. And the platform doubles as storage space.
  • Hide Away: If you are putting the laundry area in another room of the house (in the kitchen, or bathroom) then it might be a good idea to store everything (including the washing machine and dryer) inside of a cabinet – just like in picture (6). This way you can hide it all away when it is not in use.

Outdoor Living: Modern Patio Design Ideas

Outdoor Living: Modern Patio Design Ideas

This posts goes over the few design areas to focus on when it comes to creating a modern patio design.

Lighting: A modern home will be a well lit space. So you’ll want to have as much lighting around your patio as possible.

This could mean hanging up wall lights on the side of your home. Or putting uplights at the base of trees and walls to create some dramatic ambient lighting. And if you have a pergola covering your patio, this could have lights fitted to it. For more ideas and some pictures have a look at my post here: A Bright Safe Space: Modern Outdoor Lighting Ideas.

Seating and Modern Patio Furniture: The type and design of furniture you use for your patio will really set the style for the space. Go with a neutral color for your furniture – either white, black, or wooden.

Flooring: In the patio pictures in the mood board above, you can see that a modern option for a patio floor is a neutral colored (white, light grey) stone or concrete one. With the exception of the dark wooden floors in picture (4) – which contrast well with the light colored furniture.

Adding Shade and Cover: A modern pergola is the way to go. Use straight planks of wood, the darker the better, mixed in with a steel frame – just like in picture (6). Have a look at my post here for more pergola pictures and ideas: Modern Pergola Designs Gallery and Notes

The Doors: Modern patio doors will be sliding thin framed glass ones, that go from the floor all the way to the ceiling.

Curb Appeal: Design Tips For Modern Garage Doors

Curb Appeal: Design Tips For Modern Garage Doors

In the pictures in the mood board above, you can see a lot of similar design traits when it comes to modern garage doors.

Straight Edges and Lines

The design of modern garages are very straight. They are very boxy. You just see rectangles and straight edges from the panels for the doors, to the framing of the garage door and the windows.

Neutral Colors

For a luxurious and modern look, go for a dark neutral color for your garage doors. Such as back or a dark wood.

Bring in Some Natural Light

The garages in pictures 1 – 5 all have window panels embedded in the doors. This brings in some natural light into the garage space. And being frosted, they provide privacy too.

A Bright Safe Space: Modern Outdoor Lighting Ideas

A Bright Safe Space: Modern Outdoor Lighting Ideas

A modern home is a well lit home. This includes the outdoor space. You’ll want to make sure all of the exterior areas are well lit: from the front door and driveway, to the garden and around any steps. The modern outdoor lighting ideas in this post will help you light up the outside of your home with style

What Kind of Lighting Fixtures?

The first thing to decide with outdoor lighting is whether you’ll want to go with solar powered or wired lights. Solar powered lights are cheaper, and are easier and faster to install. Wired lights are more expensive and do require you to possibly dig up your garden to lay down the wiring, but they add more value to your house than the solar lights.

Modern outdoor lighting fixtures and ideas

Uplights: These are lights that point upwards, usually onto a wall or can be placed around trees. They add decorative ambient lighting, and help highlight different features in an outdoor space.

Motion Sensor Lights: These are usually used for security floodlights, hanging above the garage door. But you can also put them around the garden or by the front door.

//

Outdoor Wall Lighting: Look for ones that have a clean and sleek design, just like the light fixtures in the Amazon window above. And make sure you have enough wall lights to light up the whole space – just like in picture (5).

Path Lighting: These lights will be low down to the ground, and are especially needed around staircases and steps for safety. Picture (5) shows some lights lighting up some steps. And for a cleaner and more modern look, see if you can have these lights built into the wall so that it hides the light fixture.

The Beauty of the Flame

These days you can find good looking and modern tiki torches. They will usually come in a sleek metal casing (get yours in the Amazon window above).

Or how about a modern outdoor fireplace? Create a straight edge fire place to house a gas or ethanol burning pit – just like the ones in pictures (6) and (7)

And for the tables, look to get some modern candle lanterns or stands. Just like the candle stand featured in the Amazon window above.
