3 Unique Vintage Ceiling Design Ideas

3 Unique Vintage Ceiling Design Ideas

Below are 3 ideas for create a vintage style ceiling. These ideas are ideal for rooms that are 1.5 or double height. They can be used for normal height rooms, but it might be a bit overwhelming and little in your face.

Anaglypta Wallpaper

Anaglypta is a textured and embossed wallpaper. What makes it so great, is that it adds a very subtle decor style to a room, much more subtle than normal patterned wallpaper.

You can get Anaglypta wallpaper in simple textured patterns. For a more vintage style use something more floral and antique, or a pattern that looks like tiles, like the one above in the mood board (1).

Anaglypta wallpapers can usually be painted over to match the color palette in your room. But for a vintage styled room, going with the classic white would be the best choice.

For an even more elaborate ceiling design, you can mix coffers (beams making a square pattern on the ceiling) with Anaglypta wallpaper.

Elaborate Crown Molding

The only crown molding you’ll see in most homes today are quite simple, having a few grooves in them. But there are crown molding designs that are more decorative, fitting in with the vintage style as seen in pictures (2) and (3).

A Ceiling Rose

The origins of the ceiling rose comes from the rose being a symbol of secrecy. Dating back to England’s Tudor King Henry VIII rule, a carved rose over a meeting table meant that you could speak freely.

You can have a ceiling rose on it’s own, decorating the ceiling and being a statement piece. Or your can place a ceiling rose at the base of a pendant light, chandelier (4), or vintage ceiling fan.

They are also known as ceiling medallions.

Spicing it Up: Bedroom Ceiling Ideas

Bedroom Ceiling Ideas

Here are some bedroom ceiling ideas to help transform your space. If you have a low ceiling, be careful not to over do it with the ceiling design. It can end up being a bit overwhelming and in your face. Whereas if you have high ceiling, you have more freedom to play around with the design.

Painting, Wallpaper Decor and Ceiling Design Styles

For some people, painting the bedroom walls in a color can feel a bit overwhelming. This isn’t the case if you just paint the ceiling a color. If you have plain white walls, then painting the ceiling can add some color to the space. You could also go for a decorative pattern, just like in picture (1).

For more fancy bedroom ceiling designs have a look at Anaglypta wallpapers. It is the 3D textured wallpaper that can be painted over to suit the color scheme of the room. And it can be used on the ceilings. You can get full patterned designs, or designs that mimic tiles.

C Spencer: $6 Wayfair  |  D Victorian: $3 Wayfair

To create a traditional feeling room, look to fit bead boards on the ceiling. Another design option is to have exposed beams (2). These beams will create a rustic and charming looking bedroom.

Ceiling coffers are popular in modern homes and master bedrooms. They add a subtle style to the ceiling. In picture (3) you can see white coffers. But you can mix it up and paint the beams or the flat ceiling portions to suit your design style. Another idea is to use decorative ceiling trim, just like the ceiling in picture (4).

Finishing Touches

Once you’ve decided on the ceiling style you want to go for, there are some finishing touches that can add to the design of the room. One of these is crown molding. You could go the simple route. Or there are fancier options such as creating a coved ceiling, where the wall and ceiling are rounded – seen in picture (5). Other crown molding design options include: multi level crown molding/tray ceiling (6), or using anqitue style crown molding (7),

Another thing you can do, this time to create a whimsical and romantic bedroom, is to hang drapes down from the ceiling. Over the bed you can create your own ceiling canopy.

Lighting Design

There is a lot that you can do with lighting to create different ceiling designs.

In most modern homes you will see recessed bedroom ceiling lighting. These are lights that are fitted into the ceiling, and since everything is hidden away you create a clean, minimalist and modern look. To do this you are going to need to have a drop down or false ceiling to fit them into.

This false or drop down ceiling can take on different forms to create different designs. You can have multi level drop downs. You can create shapes with the ceilings. There are also cove lighting (8), where the ceiling lights are hidden away in side pockets, softly lighting up the bedroom. Then there is also dome ceilings, which can be combined with lighting.

A bedroom chandelier adds a formal, and shabby chic style to a bedroom. A chandelier can be combined with a decorative ceiling rose – seen in picture (9). Or if you want to go really creative and unique, why not use fiber optics to create a constellation sky in the ceiling.

Bathroom Ceiling Ideas: From Cove to Tiled Designs

Bathroom Ceiling Ideas

Here are some ideas on what to do with those bathroom ceilings:

Decorative Touches: Some decorative ideas include wallpapering the ceiling, just like in picture (1). You can get wallpaper that comes in a tile design like the one seen in picture (2). And these can be painted over to suit the look and style of your bathroom. Tiles are another way to go – in picture (3) faux bronze tiles decorate the bathroom ceiling.

Painting the ceiling a solid pop of color is a simpler and cheaper option. If you’d like to have a textured look, have a look at our painting techniques post here that shows different ways of creating painted textures – like using a sponge to create a marble look.

The Go to Choice: The most popular ceiling choice in a modern home is a finished ceiling with recessed lights. If you have a large bathroom, the ceiling design can be broken up a bit by having drop down sections like in picture (4).

For other top remodeling ideas, have a look at my post here: The Upgrade: Top 8 Bathroom Remodeling Ideas and Design Tips.

Other Structural Bathroom Ceiling Ideas: For a grander looking bathroom, have a look at installing cove lighting (5). This is when there is a drop down ceiling that has a cutaway. Light fixtures sit hidden in the cutaway section – giving the room a nice soft glow.

Crown molding can be used to line the edges of the ceiling. It can also be used along with beams to create a bold design (6).

Having a skylight is a great way of naturally lighting the bathroom during the day (7).  And if you like the shabby chic style, a chandelier is a great piece to have in the bathroom.

There is always the option of leaving the ceiling unfinished, and showing the rustic beams if you have them (8)1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8

Inspiration and Ideas for Decorating Kitchen Ceilings

Kitchen Ceiling Ideas

Here are a few ideas to get you inspired on what to do with your kitchen ceiling:

Remodeling Ideas: A drop ceiling can make the space feel cozier and allows for modern recessed lights as seen in picture (1). It also allows for cove lighting which bounces light off of the ceiling and into the room creating a grand setting (2). Instead of having a drop ceiling another idea is to have a more rustic look with exposed beams (3).

Decorative Ideas: Wallpaper can be used to decorate the ceiling, have a look at our post here: Design Notes on Kitchen Wallpaper Ideas. A cheaper alternative would be to have the ceiling painted. This can be one solid color (4) (5) (6) or you can go for a more textured look by using some unique painting techniques (7) – check out our post here for ideas: Textured Wall Painting Ideas: From Faux Wood to Linen Effects. For ideas of what colors to use and how to create an overall color scheme take a look at our post here: A Palette Guide for Kitchen Color Schemes: Decor and Paint Ideas.

Other kitchen ceiling ideas include: Fitting beams to the ceiling and have them lined with crown molding (8) (9). Another idea is to fit tiles for a more decorative look (10) (11)1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8//10/11
