Going With Glass

Glass jars and containers are great for storing ingredients, spices and things like pastas, cookies and other snacks. These can be left out on open cabinets creating a nice look in the room – just like the kitchen in picture (1). These glass jars can be left as they are, or if you want to do a little crafting some vintage style printable labels can be made and stuck on them. Like the labels in picture (3). I’ll definitely be designing a few printable labels soon.

Other Simple Ideas

Vintage soda and milk bottles are great for storing items or used as unique drinking mugs. Other vintage kitchen storage ideas include porcelain enamel containers and canisters like the ones in picture (4), wicker baskets (6), TV trays, lunch boxes, copper pots, wooden (apple/wine/fruit) crates (7), and wire baskets like the milk basket in picture (8). The old school metal buckets can be used to store things, as a trash can, or to house plants (9).

Replace Your Plastic Bottles

Here is an idea from Martha Stewart: pour all of your washing liquids into good looking (vintage) glass bottles. Having these bottles out on the countertop or on the sink’s ledge will act as nice decor pieces (10).

Redesigning Your Cabinets

When it comes to cabinets some design ideas include the weathered painted look, pastel colored cabinets, or unpainted wooden ones – depending on the overall vintage style you are going after (colorful, plain white, or rustic). Vintage Kitchen Design Ideas

Design Styles: The pictures above have been group together into the two styles of a vintage kitchen. You have the more colorful ones that use pastel colors and have porcelain enamel fixtures, and weathered painted furniture. Then there are the vintage kitchens that are more rustic in design – using more raw wooden furniture, less colors – more like a French country styled kitchen.

Furniture and Fixtures: For a vintage inspired kitchen, barn style light fixtures work best. You have the shallow bowl/pancake lights that look great, with their porcelain enamel as seen in picture (1). Or there are the gooseneck lights. A chandelier is also another great lighting fixture to have in a vintage kitchen design.

When it comes to the sink, a large rectangle porcelain one with rounded edges is the go to choice. These are usually left fully exposed, but in picture (5) the countertop covers it. Subway style tiles make for a great vintage style backsplash (6).

Decor and Accessories Ideas: Using vintage style containers and having them out on display makes for great decor. Home Style Shopping Guide: Vintage Bedroom Edition

Since the Vintage Bedroom Decor Accessories and Ideas post become quite popular, I thought it’d be helpful to put together a post of places where you can buy the items that make up a vintage styled bedroom. So here it is, the shopping list:

(1) In the ideas post we showcased a birdcage that was acting as a book shelf. The one pictured above is being used as a decorative plant display and is available here

(2) Restoration Hardware have these Pool Locker Baskets that are great for storage – link

(3) These glass bottles from Mella on Etsy can be used to display a single flower stem

(4) Amazon is the best place I’ve found for vintage wall clocks. The one pictured can be found here. But they have a whole range of vintage style clocks from wall clocks, side table ones and alarm clocks which can be found here.

(5) The Georgina bedding set from Anthropologie fits perfectly into a vintage styled bedroom

(6) Laura Ashley has a nice collection of vintage styled lamps. The Webber Table lamp pictured above can be found on Lighting Universe.

(7) Traditional clothing pegs can be used to hang up photos and can be found here.

(8) The framed vintage key from Restoration Hardware is a bit expensive but it does look great. Etsy has a lot of antique keys, but none of them framed well – a DIY project maybe?

(9) The horse and lady art print can be printed to different sizes and can come as just the poster or in a frame – from Zazzle.

(10) Other vintage bedroom accessories include vintage maps and bird prints. The one pictured above is a 1777 American colonies map and can be bought here. Vintage Bedroom Decor Accessories and Ideas

Color Scheme: For a vintage style bedroom you’ll want to go with more neutral and pastel colors like light grey, light brown, light green, or just white as seen in pictures (1) and (2).

Bed Styles: Wrought iron (3) or French bed designs with the large decorative headboards (4) are the best choices. Look for ones with decorative legs.

Furniture Pieces: Look for French style furniture sets. Focusing on French pieces makes decorating a vintage inspired room a lot easier. French design is decorative but timeless. You’ll see the classic rounded shapes and decorative hardware pieces like iron handles and knobs. Check out the French vanity counter in picture (5). Hand painted and chipped furniture would also be a good fit in a vintage bedroom.

Vintage Storage Ideas

Closets: How about giving your closets a vintage makeover. You can do this with a vintage style paint, such as mint, cream, or pastel shades. And then add some vintage style hardware – such as knobs or handles. Or you could even using a ceiling medallion to frame the handle. Have a look at these posts to see what I’m talking about:

Fabrics: When it comes to things like the bedding and throw pillows, floral motifs work best. Or if you want a more homely and informal look how about using a quilt (The Free Spirit: Bohemian Bedroom Ideas).

Other Vintage Bedroom Ideas: When it comes to decorating the bedroom here are some vintage accessories to consider – iron keys, birdcages (6), antique books, vintage maps and globes (7), iron letters, decorative frames (8), and splashes of lace. Vintage watering cans or glass bottles can be used to hold plant stems or candles (9).

Lighting: When it comes to lamp shades you’ll want to stick to the more traditional cone style ones (10). A mini chandelier hanging in the middle of the room will also add a vintage feel to the bedroom (11)1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/10/11
